Editor's note: because this is the first issue of Alphadelity to be published in any form over the past several years, we are listing the following obituaries of alumni who have left us during that time.

JOHN G. SCOTT, 91, Past National President (1929-30), died March 11, 2001 at his home in Bronxville, N.Y. A founder and alumnus of Beta Chapter, 1930 graduate of St. Louis University. Believed to be the last surviving member of the original group of Alpha and Beta chapter brothers who founded the National Fraternity. Survived by his wife of 50 years, Joan, five sons, three daughters and nine grandchildren.

GEORGE F. JELEN, Jr., Past National President (1962-63), died Sept. 10, 2000 just weeks after attending the National Convention in Washington, D.C. at which he was honored with the Wayne Palmer-Ball Award as that year's outstanding alumnus delegate. An alumnus of Kappa Chapter, George also served as National Treasurer 1961-62, as ADG's official representative to the National Interfraternity Conference from 1963-67, as NIC Director from 1967-75, and as National President of the NIC in 1975. He presided over the NIC's 200th anniversary celebration of fraternities in America in 1976. George was also responsible for the ADG commemorative plaque on display at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington.


PETER J. VANDENBERGH, Jr., Past National President (1952-53), died August 31, 1998 at age 77 in Chicago. Alumnus of Gamma Chapter at DePaul University. Also served as Second Vice President 1949-52, Secretary (1942-43, 1947-49). Also served briefly on ADGEF Advisory Council just prior to his death. Survived by three daughters, one son, two grandsons, many nieces and nephews.


JOHN P. FOX, former vice president and general counsel for Beatrice Foods, died January 5, 2002 at age 83. Long-time resident of Evanston, Ill. and an alumnus of Alpha Chapter, a native of Chicago. Survived by sister Mildred, many nieces, nephews, grand- nieces and nephews.


  


ARISTIDE J. "JACK" FORTIER, Jr., died September 1998 at age 73. Alumnus of Epsilon Chapter who was part of the group that re-activated the chapter in the years following World War II. Native of New Orleans and a resident of Metairie, survived by his wife Mary.

JOHN C. MULLEN, M.D., alumnus of Lambda Chapter, graduated from Loyola University, Los Angeles in 1955, St. Louis University Medical School, 1959. Charter member, American Board of Nuclear Medicine; member, Flying Samaritans (doctors who flew to provide free medical care to poor people in Mexico), 1975-96.


DAN "SLUGGO" DUDAS, died August 9, 2000 in St. Louis. Joined Zeta Chapter in 1980. Survived by wife, Kathy, one son and one daughter.


JOHN FERRARA, died December 2000 in St. Louis. Joined Beta Chapter in 1964. Founder of popular Pasta House chain of restaurants in St. Louis.


WILLARD BACK, died March 10, 1999. Alumnus of Gamma Chapter at DePaul University, resident of Littleton, CO. Well-known bandleader and piano player in the Denver area for 42 years. Began playing professionally while still in college, led various combos and big bands through the 1940s and 50s, often featured on network radio shows. Also wrote a number of popular songs. Donated his entire musical library and collection to the University of Wyoming. Survived by wife Eunice, a former singer in his band, and two daughters.


MIKE SCHREIBER, died October 1998, age 27. Alumnus of Zeta Chapter, active late 1980s-early 90s.


MATT RICE, alumnus of Epsilon Chapter, died April 2003.


RENE HERNANDEZ, died May 3, 2003. A 1978 graduate of Loyola Marymount University, joined Lambda Chapter 1976. A career law enforcement officer, Rene remained an active rugby player and supporter of the Loyola Rugby Club and other rugby groups throughout his life.
