Alumni Chapters Reorganizing Around the Country

By PETE MANNING
National Director, Alumni Affairs

Over the past year, our National Council has been working hard to ensure the continued success of Alpha Delta Gamma. Part of ADG's ongoing success and continued growth has always been the help, direction, support and strength of the alumni. The main focus of this message is to look into strengthening our alumni groups in each city and around the country, with the goal of reactivating the active alumni chapters.

It would be great to see an alumni chapter in each city with an active chapter as well as other cities with a significant number of alumni residents in the area. Also, with alumni direction, a national list can be created with current information on all alumni, making communication more efficient. With support, focus, and help from more alumni, we can pool our resources, gain from our experiences, and strengthen the bond of brotherhood created when we joined Alpha Delta Gamma.

There are ADG alumni all over the continental U.S. as well as abroad. At the same time, however, many of our alumni are not very well informed about what is going on with their active chapter or their alumni brothers. Reactivating our alumni chapters would help address this situation. Doing so would not entail much cost, but would require some time commitment. However, most alumni would have the time to meet on a regular basis to discuss everything from the annual golf scramble, alumni functions at the university, ADGEF fundraisers, or joint events with the actives. The alumni chapters would be full functioning chapters with a constitution, officers, etc., giving them the ability to assign tasks, create a budget, and communicate with the actives, the school, other alumni chapters, and of course the national.

Speaking of communications, functioning alumni chapters would be able to create an updated list containing pertinent alumni information. That information would include the standard address, home phone number and work number, to more modern ways of staying in touch, such as email addresses, digital paging, etc. By having an up-to-date list each alumni chapter can better communicate scheduled events, weddings/births/deaths, or brothers' relocating in or out of the area.

There have been some alumni concerns addressed to me, as well as the National Council and other alumni about such lists. They would be for our use only, never given out, rented or sold for solicitation by outside vendors, thereby giving everyone the confidence of trusting fellow alumni with such personal data. I know that the national and all the alumni I have spoken with feel that having a current contact list would be a great tool. It would keep us closer together, even when we are miles apart.

How often do you wonder what happened to certain brothers since they moved away? We can find out simply by banding together and rolling up our sleeves to share information and collectively strengthen ourselves.

Alpha Delta Gamma created a place where we all could get together with men of the same character and make ourselves better men and citizens. Most of us have been involved with our chapters and with each other since graduation. We all agree that we, as alumni, would like to keep in closer contact with other alumni and stay more involved with ADG. By setting and achieving our first goal of reactivating our alumni chapters, we can better develop ourselves as alumni, and better serve our great fraternity in the years to come.
