Expansion Update: New Colony at Chestnut Hill College

By JAMES SMITH National Vice President, External Affairs

Alpha Delta Gamma is pleased to announce the formation of our newest colony at Chestnut Hill College. On the night of March 13, 2004, sixteen men became the official founding members of Chestnut Hill Colony. The Official Ceremony was overseen by National Executive Vice President, Derrick Cabrera, Vice President of External Affairs, James Smith and Vice President of Internal Affairs, William Phelan. Members of Rho Chapter, Beta Chapter, Kappa Chapter and Philadelphia University Colony were present at the ceremony.

Chestnut Hill College is a beautiful tree lined campus situated in the historic Chestnut Hill area of Philadelphia, famous for cobblestone streets, quaint shops, Victorian houses and yet only fifteen minutes from downtown Philadelphia. The school was originally founded as a women's college in 1924 but went co-educational in the fall of 2003. We were originally contacted by students at the college in late August, 2003. After some informal meetings over cheese steaks at Bruno's Restaurant, the group, led by colony President, George Kando, developed over the next few months, from an interest group to a full-fledged colony. Following a successful meeting with the National Council at Mid Year Council, also in Philadelphia, the group was poised to become a colony

Chestnut Hill Colony recently wrapped up their first semester as a colony. Under the direct supervision of James Fitzgerald, Northeast Director of Expansion and myself they were educated in the principles of Alpha Delta Gamma Fraternity. In the fall semester, they will still be a colony, but will function more like a chapter does in its day to day operations. The group, comprised of the freshman class president, members on the basketball, soccer, tennis and golf teams, with biology, politics and education majors, just to name a few, is truly a diverse and well rounded group of individuals. The future is bright for the colony at Chestnut Hill.

This marks the second colony in Philadelphia in the past year! However, for expansion as well as the active chapters to continue to thrive, alumni involvement must continue to be positive and strong. If you have a son, relative, or friend that attends a college that we do not currently have a chapter at, or if you would like to be involved with Fraternity Expansion, please contact James Smith (vpexternalaffairs@alphadeltagamma.org) for more information.
